STORY TELLING

THE OBSTACLE IN OUR PATH

In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it.

Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been.

The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never understand.

Moral : Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve one's condition.

SPECIAL INTRODUCTION

MAHATMA JOTIRAO PHULE

(Great writer, thinker and social reformer)

[11 April 1827 - 28 November 1890]

Mahatma Phule’s full name was Jotirao Govindrao Phule. He was born on 11 April 1827 at Katgun in Satara. He spent his entire life in social work. He always strived for the welfare of the peasants, the untouchables, and the masses.

Mahatma Phule’s father’s name was Govindrao Sheriba Phule and his mother’s name was Chimanabai Phule. His wife was Savitribai Phule, the first female teacher. By Educating Savitribai Phule herself, he established the first girls’ school in Pune.

His mother died when Jotirao was young. He married Savitribai at the age of thirteen. Mahatma Phule completed his secondary education at the Scottish Mission High School. He was known as a student of brilliant intellect in school life.

Realizing that ignorance is responsible for the bitterness and inequality in society, she began to strive for what women and the masses should learn. He thought that only if the girls should learn, the real development of the family and the society is possible.

Mahatma Phule educated his wife Savitribai and established the first school for girls in Maharashtra in 1848 in Pune. He entrusted the responsibility of teaching there to his wife Savitribai Phule. Later he also established schools for the untouchables.

Mahatma Phule along with his colleagues and followers established the Satyashodhak Samaj in 1873. The great aim of this organization was to bring justice to the victims of the society and to create a noble society through education by eradicating casteism and untouchability. Mahatma Phule’s writing and reading were profound. His books “Shetkaryancha Asood”, “Sarvajanik Satyadharma” and “Gulamgiri” are famous. His writings show how great a thinker and writer he was.

In 1888, the people of Mumbai felicitated Rao Bahadur and conferred the title of ‘Mahatma’ on him. Two years later, on 28th November 1890, this great thinker and truth seeker passed away in Pune. Mahatma Phule’s work was immense so that he could create hope for a truthful life in the whole society.
