SPECIAL EVENTS

1660 : Baji Prabhu Deshpande, the hero fighting Pawankhind, died saying 'Now I will die happily' after hearing the gunshots of Shivaji Maharaj reaching Vishalgarh.

1837 : Queen Victoria moved to Buckingham Palace. Since then it became the official residence of the King/Queen of England.

1803 : Raja Ram Mohan Rai and Alexander Duff founded the Scottish Church College with five of their students.

1905 : Boycott of foreign goods was first published in Calcutta weekly newspaper 'Sanjeevani'.

1908 : The second sedition trial against Lokmanya Tilak began.

1908 : Women are allowed to participate in the Olympic Games.

1929 : Jatindranath Das started his hunger strike in Lahore Jail. He died on hunger strike.

1983 : Genocide in Sri Lanka. 3,000 Tamils killed. Over 400,000 Tamils fled.

2006 : The issue of nuclear bomb development in Iran was referred to the United Nations Security Council.

2011 : 26 people were killed and 130 injured in 3 bomb blasts in Mumbai city.

1892 : Kesarbai Kerkar - classical singer of the Jaipur-Atrauli dynasty. (Died : 16 September 1977)

1930 : Birth of former Indian cricketer and former Indian Test cricket umpire Swaroop Kishan.

1940 : Birth of Sunita Jain, Indian scholar, novelist, short story writer and poet of English and Hindi literature.

1953 : Birth of National Film Award-winning Indian Tamil-language poet, lyricist and novelist Vairamuthu Ramasamy.

1964 : Indian cricketer Utpal Chatterjee.

DEATH 

1660 : Baji Prabhu Deshpande sacrificed his life for Swaraj by fighting Pawankhind.

1969 : Maharshi Nyayaratna Dhundirajashastri Vinod - philosopher, thinker, yogi, freedom fighter and writer. (Born : 12 January 1902)

1969 : Death of Muhammad Shahidullah, Bengali educationist, writer, philosopher and linguist of East Pakistan.

1994 : Pt. Krishna Gundopant and classical (Dhrupada) singer, composer and teacher (Born : 26 December 1925)

1995 : Dnyanpith Award - winning Indian Bengali - language novelist and poet Ashapurna Devi passed away.

1995 : Death of Devyani Chaubal, Indian journalist and columnist, well - known Indian film magazine writer.

2000 : Indira Sant Sahitya Akademi Award - winning poet and writer. (Born : 4 January 1914)

2009 : Nilu Phule - Sangeet Natak Akademi Award-winning famous Indian Hindi, Marathi film actor. (Born : 1930)

2010 : Manohari Singh - Indian music director, saxophonist and film composer Taschan, lyricist R. D. Chief Organizer of Burman. (Born : 8 March 1931)

STORY TELLING 

THE FOX AND THE STORK

A selfish fox once invited a stork to dinner at his home in a hollow tree. That evening, the stork flew to the fox's home and knocked on the door with her long beak. The fox opened the door and said, "Please come in and share my food."

The stork was invited to sit down at the table. She was very hungry and the food smelled delicious! The fox served soup in shallow bowls and he licked up all his soup very quickly. However, the stork could not have any of it as the bowl was too shallow for her long beak. The poor stork just smiled politely and stayed hungry.

The selfish fox asked, "Stork, why haven't you taken your soup? Don't you like it?"

The stork replied, "It was very kind of you to invite me for dinner.

Tomorrow evening, please join me for dinner at my home."

The next day, when the fox arrived at the stork's home, he saw that they were also having soup for dinner. This time the soup was served in tall jugs. The stork drank the soup easily but the fox could not reach inside the tall jug. This time it was his turn to go hungry.

Moral : A selfish act can backfire on you.

SPECIAL INTRODUCTION

INDIRA SANT

[Great Marathi Poetess]

Indira Sant was born on 4 January 1914 as Indira Dikshit in the small town Tavandi of Belgaum District, India, Karnataka.

Indira studied at Rajaram College in Kolhapur, and Fergusson College in Pune where she met her future husband Narayan Sant. In 1940, four years after their marriage, the two published a joint collection of their poems titled 'Sahawas'. Indira's husband, Narayan Sant, died in 1946. The pain of loss of her husband found its expression in some of her poems. The principal theme of most of her poetry is love and longing. The love of nature is also evident in her poems. Her poetry further pertains to different dimensions of a woman's life.

Indira Sant wrote 25 books. She worked first as a professor and then as the principal in a teacher's training college in Belgaum.

Semi - autobiographical articles by Sant were published in 1986 in a book titled 'Mrudgandha' (मृद्गंध). The book 'Phulwel' (फुलवेल) contains a collection of her essays.

Ramesh Tendulkar published in 1982 a compilation titled Mrunmayi (मृण्मयी) of Sant's selected poetry.

Her poems have been translated into English as "Snake - skin and other poems of Indira Sant" (1975).
