STORY TELLING

BOY AND HIS ANGER

Once, there was a young boy. This boy had problems controlling his anger. When he got angry, he would say the first thing that came to mind, even if it affected people.

One day, his father gifted him a hammer and a bundle of nails, then said, “Whenever you get mad, hammer a nail into the backyard fence.”

In the first days, the boy used up half of the nails. Over the next weeks, he used up fewer nails, until his temper was under control. Then, his father asked the young boy to remove a nail for each day he didn’t lose his temper.

On the day when the boy removed his last nail, his father told him, “You have done good, boy. But, can you see the holes in the wall? The fence is never going to be the same. Likewise, when you say mean things in anger, you’ll leave a scar.'

Moral : Anger is like a knife - one of the most dangerous weapons. When you use it, the wounds will heal, but the scars remain.

SPECIAL INTRODUCTION

BATUKESHWAR DUTT

(Great Freedom Fighter)

[18 November 1910 - 20 July 1965]

Batukeshwar Dutt, a great revolutionary leader and freedom fighter, was born on November 18, 1910 AD in Burdwan district in Bengal. He was popular with names ‘Mohan’ and ‘Battu’ among his friends and comrades. He was very disappointed with the miserable conditions of his fellow countrymen under the cruel colonial rule of the British and had a deep desire to do something for his country.

Batukeshwar Dutt met Sardar Bhagat Singh in 1924 in Kanpur and soon joined the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). Now he started efforts to uproot the British rule in a more organized way. Soon he became a leading figure of the HSRA and a trusted partner of Sardar Bhagat Singh and Chandrasekhar Azad. He also learnt the art of making bombs just to maximize the terror in the British ranks.

Batukeshwar Dutt took part in many revolutionary activities of the HSRA against the British but he is widely known for exploding bombs along with Bhagat Singh in the Central Legislative Assembly in New Delhi on April 8, 1929. Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw bombs in the empty space of the assembly as they wanted to make a deaf government hear the plight and misery of people, not hurt anyone by the bombs. The bomb's action was an attempt to draw government’s attention towards many unpopular and unjust bills like the Public Safety Bill. The revolutionary duo shouted slogans against the oppressive British government and got themselves arrested instead of fleeing from the spot after the action of the bomb.

Batukeshwar Dutt was deported to the Cellular Jail in Andaman. He continued his fight against the British even in the jail as he launched a hunger strike against the inhuman treatment to the Indian political prisoners there. He succeeded in securing some rights and respect for Indian political prisoners.

He actively participated in the Quit India movement and was sent to jail again. In brief, he made relentless efforts to purge his country of British rule throughout his life. Batukeshwar Dutt was one of those freedom fighters who witnessed the historic dawn of India’s freedom on August 15, 1947 AD. He passed away on January 20, 1965 in Delhi.
