STORY TELLING
THE WIND AND THE SUN
Once the Wind and the Sun had an argument. "I am stronger than you," said the Wind. "No, you are not," said the Sun. Just at that moment they saw a traveler walking across the road. He was wrapped in a shawl. The Sun and the Wind agreed that whoever could separate the traveller from his shawl was stronger.
The Wind took the first turn. He blew with all his might to tear the traveller's shawl from his shoulders. But the harder he blew, the tighter the traveller gripped the shawl to his body. The struggle went on till the Wind's turn was over.
Now it was the Sun's turn. The Sun smiled warmly. The traveller felt the warmth of the smiling Sun. Soon he let the shawl fall open. The Sun's smile grew warmer and warmer... hotter and hotter. Now the traveller no longer needed his shawl. He took it off and dropped it on the ground. The Sun was declared stronger than the Wind.
Moral : Brute force can't achieve what a gentle smile can.

SPECIAL INTRODUCTION
JAYANT VISHNU NARLIKAR
(Indian Cosmologist & Astrophysicist)
[Born : 19 July 1938]
The famous cosmologist and astrophysicist, Jayant Vishnu Narlikar was born on July 19, 1938 at Kolhapur, Maharashtra. His father Vishnu Vasudeva Narlikar was a well-known teacher and mathematician. He was professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics in the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. His mother, Sumati Vishnu Narlikar was a Sanskrit scholar. Jayant inherited the intellectual brilliance from his parents and always did exceptionally well in his class and obtained top position. He also studied at Banaras Hindu ‘ University and got his B.Sc. degree in 1957.
Then he went to Cambridge University, England for higher studies in mathematics in the year 1957 and joined Fritz William House. He obtained his masters degree in 1964 and then Ph.D. in 1963. As a research scholar he won the prestigious Smith’s Prize in 1962 and then Adam’s Prize in 1967. In the same year he secured his Sc.D. degree from the Cambridge.
He married Mangala Sadashiv Rajwade, a scholar in mathematics. They have three daughters. At Cambridge he was a student of the famous astronomer and astrophysicist Fred Hoyle.
He was also a founder staff member of the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy which was set up at the Cambridge University under the guidance and inspiration of Fred Hoyle in 1966. When he returned to India in 1972 he was appointed Professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research at Mumbai.
Under him the Theoretical Astrophysics Group at the Institute developed into a leading learning centre in the subject. In 1983 he was made senior Professor at the Institute. In 1988 he left for the newly established Inter- University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune and became its Founder-Director.
The Centre soon became an Institute of international fame under his worthy guidance and leadership. Narlikar’s early researches as an astrophysicist and astronomer provided a scaler field formulation of the steady- state universe. With Fred Hoyle and Geoffery Burbidge, he later revived that work as a serious alternative to the hot Big Bang theory.
He described action at-a-distance electrodynamics and extended his ideas to propose a machine theory of gravity. Subsequently he further stretched his theory to account for the observed redshirt anomalies in quasars and galaxies. He also showed how a synthesis is possible between Einstein’s general theory of relativity and Mach’s principle.
Narlikar has won many honours and awards. In 1978 he got the S.S. Bhatnagar award for physical sciences and then F.I.E Foundation’s Rashtrabhushan Award in 1981. In 1993 he was given B.M. Birla Award.
He is a fellow of Indian National Science Academy, Royal Astronomical Society London, Cambridge Philosophical Society Indian Academy of Sciences, Third World Academy of Science etc. He was honoured with honorary doctorate degrees by the Burdwan and Banaras Hindu Universities. In 1965 he was awarded Padam Bhushan by the President of India.
