STORY TELLING

THE BEAR AND THE TWO FRIENDS

One day, two friends were walking through the forest. They knew the forest was a dangerous place and that anything could happen. So, they promised to remain close to each other in case of any danger.

All of a sudden, a big bear was approaching them. One of the friends quickly climbed a nearby tree, leaving the other friend behind.

The other friend did not know how to climb, and instead, followed common sense. He laid down on the ground and remained there, breathless, pretending to be dead.

The bear approached the friend lying on the ground. The animal started to smell his ear before slowly wandering off again because bears never touch those who are dead.

Soon, the friend who hid in the tree came down. He asked his friend, “My dear friend, what secret did the bear whisper to you?” The friend replied, “The bear simply advised me never to believe a false friend.”

Moral : A true friend will always support and stand by you in any situation.

SPECIAL INTRODUCTION

POETESS SHANTA SHELKE

(A renowned Marathi poetess, writer and lyricist.)

[19 Octobe 1922 - 6 June 2002]

Shanta Shelke was born on October 19, 1922 in Indapur, Pune. After completing her early education at Mahatma Gandhi School in Rajgurunagar and the Huzurpaga High School, she pursued a bachelor’s degree from SP College, Pune. She later completed her MA in Marathi and Sanskrit from Bombay University (now known as the University of Mumbai), where she received the NC Kelkar Medal for Excellence.

Before embarking on a career as a lyricist and poet, Shelke worked several jobs as a proofreader and a columnist. She worked as an assistant editor for the weekly Navyug for five years and for Dainik Maratha for two years. She also served on the Central Board of Film Certification and the Theatre Examination Board. Later, she worked as a professor of Marathi at Hislop College, Nagpur, and then at Ruia and Dayanand College, Mumbai. She settled in Pune upon retirement.

Shelke’s first poem was published in 1941 in the magazine Shalapatrak, and her first poetry anthology, Varsha, was published in 1947. Her poetry ranges from lyric and devotional to folk songs. Aesthetics, humour, human behaviour, and spontaneity are the hallmarks of her literature. Shelke has over 100 books to her credit, including poetry collections, translations, and novels. Gondan (Tattoo), published in 1975, is one of her most noted collections of poems, and some of her other acclaimed works include Dharma, Vijhti Jyot, and Gulmohar.

Shelke’s transition from poet to lyricist was a smooth one, and she received much appreciation within her new field as well. Her songs have been performed by some of the most reputed singers in the film industry, such as Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosale, and Kishori Amonkar.

Shelke was also a competent translator, having rendered Kalidasa’s Meghdoot from Sanskrit to Marathi. Some of her other prominent translations include Lokanche Rajya (originally written by Virendra Bhattacharya) and Chaughijani (a translation of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott). In 1998, she presided over the All India Level Marathi Literary Conference held in Pune.

Shelke was awarded the 1994 Madgulkar Award and the 2001 Yashwantrao Chawan Pratishtan Award for her contribution to Marathi literature. She passed away soon after, on June 6, 2002.
