STORY TELLING

LYING BREAKS TRUST

Once, there was a boy who became bored when he watched over the village sheep grazing on the hillside. To entertain himself, he sang out, “Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!”

When the villagers heard the cry, they came running up the hill to drive the wolf away. But, when they arrived, they saw no wolf. The boy was amused when seeing their angry faces.

“Don’t scream wolf, boy,” warned the villagers, “when there is no wolf!” They angrily went back down the hill.

Later, the shepherd boy cried out once again, “Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!” To his amusement, he looked on as the villagers came running up the hill to scare the wolf away.

As they saw there was no wolf, they said strictly, “Save your frightened cry for when there really is a wolf! Don’t cry ‘wolf’ when there is no wolf!” But the boy grinned at their words while they walked grumbling down the hill once more.

Later, the boy saw a real wolf sneaking around his flock. Alarmed, he jumped on his feet and cried out as loud as he could, “Wolf! Wolf!” But the villagers thought he was fooling them again, and so they didn’t come to help.

At sunset, the villagers went looking for the boy who hadn’t returned with their sheep. When they went up the hill, they found him weeping.

“There really was a wolf here! The flock is gone! I cried out, ‘Wolf!’ but you didn’t come,” he wailed.

An old man went to comfort the boy. As he put his arm around him, he said, “Nobody believes a liar, even when he is telling the truth!”

Moral : Lying breaks trust - even if you’re telling the truth, no one believes a liar.

SPECIAL INTRODUCTION

MILKHA SINGH

(The Flying Sikh of India)

[20 November 1929 - 18th June 2021]

Milkha Singh, popularly known as ‘The Flying Sikh’, was born on 20th November 1929 in Govindpura, a small village in Punjab, which is now part of Pakistan. His early life was marred by the tragic loss of his parents during the partition of India in 1947. The harrowing experience of fleeing to India amidst communal riots shaped his life and character, instilling in him a resilience that would later become his signature trait.

Milkha Singh’s journey to athletic stardom was far from easy. Initially, he failed thrice in his attempts to join the Indian Army. However, his indomitable spirit led him to try again, and he was finally selected in 1951. It was in the army where his potential as an athlete was discovered. Singh’s first taste of success came in 1958 when he won gold in both 200m and 400m events at the Asian Games held in Tokyo.

Milkha Singh’s international fame rose to new heights when he won the gold medal in the 400m event at the 1958 Commonwealth Games, becoming the first Indian to do so. His record-breaking time of 46.6 seconds remained unbeaten for nearly 40 years. However, the most iconic moment of his career was arguably at the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he narrowly missed out on the bronze medal in a photo-finish race. Despite the loss, Singh’s performance, where he clocked a time of 45.73 seconds, set a national record that stood for 38 years.

Milkha Singh’s impact extends beyond his athletic achievements. He was bestowed with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 1959 for his contributions to the sport. Singh’s life story of overcoming personal tragedy and hardship to achieve international fame serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes. His autobiography, ‘The Race of My Life’, and the biographical film ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ further popularized his inspiring journey.

Milkha Singh passed away on 18th June 2021, but his legacy lives on. He was not just an athlete, but a symbol of grit, determination, and the will to overcome all odds. His life story is a testament to the power of perseverance and an undying spirit. Singh’s contribution to Indian sports and his role as an ambassador for athletics will forever be etched in the annals of Indian sports history. In the end, Milkha Singh’s life serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, inspiring countless individuals to strive for excellence and never give up, no matter the circumstances.
