STORY TELLING

THE VILLAGER AND THE SPECTACLES

There was a villager. He was illiterate. He did not know how to read and write. He often saw people wearing spectacles for reading books or papers. He thought, "If have spectacles, I can also read like these people. I must go to town and buy a pair of spectacles for myself." So one day he went to a town. He entered a spectacles shop He asked the shopkeeper for a pair of spectacles for reading. The shopkeeper gave him various pairs of spectacles and a book. The villager tried all the spectacles one by one. But he could not read anything. He told the shopkeeper that all those spectacles were useless for him. The shopkeeper gave him a doubtful look. Then he looked at the book. It was upside down! The shopkeeper said, "Perhaps you don't know how to read."

The villager said, "No, I don't. I want to buy spectacles so that I can read like others. But I

can't read with any of these spectacles." The shopkeeper controlled his laughter with great difficulty when he learnt the real problem of his illiterate customer.

He explained to the villager, "My dear friend, you are very ignorant. Spectacles don't help to read or write. They only help you to see better. First of all you must learn to read and write."

Moral : Ignorance is blindness.

SPECIAL INTRODUCTION

HUTATMA BABU GENU

Mill - worker

[1 January 1908 - 12 December 1930]

Babu Genu was a 22-year-old millhand who lived at the Phoenix mills chawl (tenement), which is today an upmarket commercial area in Mumbai. He came to the city from his village in Mahalunge in the district of Pune, Maharashtra. He was not highly educated but harboured a burning love for his country in his heart.

It was the peak of the Civil Disobedience movement in 1930. On 12 December 1930, a cloth merchant named George Frazier of Manchester was moving loads of foreign-made cloth from his shop in old Hanuman Galli in the Fort region to Mumbai Port. He was given police protection as per his request. The activists begged not to move the truck, but the police forced the protesters aside and managed to get the truck moving. Near Bhaangwadi on Kalbadevi Road, Shahid Babu Genu stood in front of the truck, shouting praises for Mahatma Gandhi. The police officer ordered the driver to drive the truck over Shahid Babu Genu, but the driver Vithal Dhondu, so refused, saying:  "I am Indian and he is also Indian, so, we both are the brothers of each other, then how can I murder my brother?".

After that, a British sergeant sat on the driver's seat and drove the truck over Babu Genu and crushed him to death under the truck. This resulted in a huge wave of anger, strikes, and protests throughout Mumbai.

On that day December 12, 1930, crowds of people streamed in at the congested place where he was killed. People laid flowers and burnt incense on the spot still fresh with marks of his blood stains on the ground. Overwhelmed with grief, the crowd even forced the passers-by to go bare-headed as a mark of respect to the dead. The rampaging mob also burnt bonfires of clothes at various thoroughfares of the city. Major newspapers reported the incident widely over the next two days.

Babu Genu’s death caused massive unrest in the city. On the next day, thousands participated in his funeral. The funeral procession was taken through the heart of the city and the crowd wanted to take the body to Girgaum Chowpatty and cremate it on the sands. Legendary freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak was the only person to have been cremated there. The angry mourners wanted Genu to receive the same respect. The British disallowed it following pitched battles fought between the protestors and the British police. Genu was finally laid to rest at the crematorium which was assigned by the British.

There is a trust and road named after Genu in Pune.  The lane in Kalbadevi where Babu Genu laid down his life has been named after him.
