1883 : Birthday of the great Indian revolutionary and freedom fighter Shaheed Madan Lal Dhingra, who assassinated British officer William Curzon Wylie while studying in England.

1895 : Birthday of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Maharaja of Nawanagar State in British India and Indian Test cricketer in the British team.

1912 : Gajanan Hari and Raja Nene - actors and directors in film and theater. (Died : 21 February 1975)

1950 : Birth of Padma Shri and National Film Award winning Indian Hindi film actress Shabana Azmi.

1956 : Anant Gadgil - Indian politician, Maharashtra MLA.

1968 : Indian actor, director and politician Upendra Rao born.

1989 : Birth of Arjuna Award winning Indian badminton player Ashwini Ponnapa.

1859 : Death of Tatya Tope, a leading revolutionary in India's first independence movement.

1899 : Death of Rajnarayan Basu, Indian writer and intellectual of the Bengal Renaissance.

1958 : Bhagwan Das, the famous Indian theosophist and public figure who received the Bharat Ratna Award, died.

1999 : Arun Vasudev Karnataka - Marathi film director.

2004 : Dr. Bhalchandra Dinkar Phadke, a perceptive critic of Dalit literature. (Born : 13 May 1925)

2013 : Indian politician William Bhargavan dies.

STORY TELLING

THE MAGICAL DONKEY

Once Akbar gifted a very precious necklace to his queen which she safely in her room. But unfortunately, one day necklace was misplaced and queen was unable to locate it.

Then Akbar came to know that not only the necklace but few other precious things have also gone missing in the past few days from his palace. Unable to resolve the situation, he asked Birbal to help.

Birbal brought along a friend of his, a magical donkey, to solve the mystery. He asked each suspect to go alone in the tent and hold the donkey’s tail and if the person was the thief, the donkey will identify him and give him a good kick.  Everyone followed Birbal’s instruction other than the thief. As Birbal had sprayed a powerful scent on Donkey’s tail and thief avoided touching the donkey’s tail out of fear, he was finally caught.

Moral : A clever idea always saves the day.

SPECIAL INTRODUCTION

TATYA TOPE

(Indian Rebellion)

[16 February 1814 - 18 April 1859]

Tatya Tope was a pivotal figure in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, leading as a courageous rebel leader. Recognized for his military acumen, he is often credited with initiating the First War of Independence against British colonial rule. Tatya Tope's resolute leadership and strategic prowess played a crucial role in galvanizing the uprising. His indomitable spirit and dedication remain emblematic of the fierce fight for freedom during that era of colonial subjugation.

Tatya Tope was born in Nashik, Maharashtra, in 1814, as the only son of Pandurang Rao Tope and his wife, Rukhmabai.

Tantia Tope defeated the East India Company's Indian troops in Kanpur in May 1857. He was the Indian leader of the 1857 Rebellion. He was notorious for his guerilla tactics, which frightened the British. He caused General Windham to withdraw from Gwalior.

He worked alongside Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi to capture Gwalior. When a sword slew her, Tatya administered the last rituals and burned her body.

During his lifetime, he engaged in 150 engagements with the British and killed 10,000 of their soldiers.
