IMPORTANCE OF THE DAY

SPECIAL EVENTS

1908 : Lokmanya Tilak was sentenced to 6 years of black water for writing the blasphemous headline 'देशाचे दुर्दैव'.

1931 : Vasudev Balwant Gogte shot Sir John Hotson, Governor of Bombay Province, in the library of Fergusson College. Hotson survived. Later this 'Hotson' Gogte became the Mayor of Pune.

1933 : Pilot Willie Post completed a solo circumnavigation of the Earth in a record time of 7 days, 18 hours and 49 minutes.

1942 : Deportation of Jews from Warsaw begins.

1944 : Communist rule begins in Poland.

1946 : The Irgunya terrorist organization bombed the British headquarters in Jerusalem. 90 of them were killed.

1947 : Adoption of the National Flag.

1999 : The International Labor Organization introduced the scheme of equal pay for equal work.

2003 : Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein's children were killed in a bomb attack by the US military on Iraq.

2012 : Pranab Mukherjee, an Indian National Congress politician, was appointed as the President of India.

BIRTH

1894 : Birth of Sardar Tej Singh Akarpuri, Member of India's first Lok Sabha.

1898 : Pandit Vinayakrao Patwardhan - singer from the Gwalior dynasty of Indian classical music. (Died : 23. August 1975)

1915 : Birth of Indian - Pakistani politician and diplomat Shaista Suhrawardy Ikamullah. (Died : 11 December 2000)

1925 : Govind Talwalkar - Journalist (Editor of Maharashtra Times for 27 years) and author. Honored Maharashtrian journalist with Lokmanya Tilak Purskar by Government of India, veteran editor of English newspaper Maharashtra Times, historian, scholar, social reformer and writer.

1937 : Vasant Baburao Ranjane - Medium pace bowler. (Died : 22 December 2011)

1965 : Birth of Sandeep Pandey, a Ramon Magsaysay award winning Indian social activist and a founder and member of Asha Sanstha.

1970 : Devendra Fadnavis, the present Chief Minister of Maharashtra, was born.

1992 : American singer and actress Selena Gomez was born.

1948: Death of famous Indian painter Hemendranath Majumdar of pre-independence India.

1987 : Former Indian Test cricketer A. G. Death of Kripal Singh.

1995 : Harold Larwood - English cricketer. (Born : 14 November 1904)

2003 : Qusay Hussein - son of Saddam Hussein (Born : 17 May 1966)

2003 : Uday Hussein - Son of Saddam Hussein. (Born : June 18, 1965)

THE GOLDEN EGG

Once upon a time, a farmer had a goose that laid a golden egg every day. The farmer used to sell that egg and earn enough money to meet their family's day-to-day needs. One day, the farmer thought that if he could get more such golden eggs and make a lot of money and become a wealthy person. The farmer decided to cut the goose and remove all the golden eggs from its stomach. As soon as they killed the bird and opened the goose’s stomach, they found no eggs. The foolish farmer realized they had destroyed their last resource out of greed.

Moral : Greed destroys your resource.

SPECIAL INTRODUCTION

LOKMANYA BAL GANGADHAR TILAK

[ 23 july 1856 - 1 August 1920 ]

(First leader of the Indian independence)

Lokmanya Tilak. Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born on July 23, 1856, at Chikhalgaon, a coastal village of Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra. In his later, he was given the title “Lokmanya”, which means one respected by the people.

Tilak worked as a lawyer and later as a teacher. The social and political condition of India distressed him a great deal. He launched two newspaper, the “Kesari” in Maharathi and the “Maratha” in English, in 1881.

Through these newspapers, he expressed his ideas and awakened the masses. Tilak opposed evil social practices such as child marriage. He advocated literacy among women and widow remarriage. Tilak started the public celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi festival in Maharashtra.

He also started the Shiv Jayanti festival. These festivals were organized with a view to bringing the people together and inspiring them to fight against British rule.

Tilak was jailed several times. Once while in jail, he wrote his famous book, the “Gita Rahasya”. After his release he plunged into the Home Rule Movement. This great leader died on August 1, 1920. He was mourned by lakh of people all over the nation.

Lokmanya Tilak gave the freedom fighters his slogan “Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it”.  He commanded devotion from all.

Tilak was the main responsible, to trouble the British. He taught that there should be a public meeting, but indeed, it was not possible.

His first step was to bring lord Ganesha at home, and this was successful, the British taught, it is rituals, and avoid this, apart from this there held several meeting.

Tilak was a very intelligent and grateful freedom fighter. His contribute towards the nation is remember always, by us.

After his death, Mahatma Gandhi took the leadership and fought against British.

Just for his memorable contributions, many places are given his name, such as “LLT”, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.
