STORY TELLING

A BUNDLE OF STICKS

Once upon a time, three neighbours living in a village were having trouble with their crops. Each of the neighbours had one field, but the crops on their fields were infested with pests and were wilting. Every day, they would come up with different ideas to help their crops. The first one tried using a scarecrow in his field, the second used pesticides, and the third built a fence on his field, all to no avail.

One day, the village head came by and called the three farmers. He gave them each a stick and asked them to break it. The farmers could break them easily. He then gave them a bundle of three sticks, and again, asked them to break it. This time, the farmers struggled to break the sticks.

The village head said, “Together, you are stronger and work better than you do it alone.” The farmers understood what the village head was saying. They pooled in their resources and got rid of the pests from their fields.

Moral : There is strength in unity.

SPECIAL INTRODUCTION

ANNAPURNA MAHARANA

(Indian freedom fighter)

[3 November 1917 - 31 December 2012]

Annapurna Maharana was born on 3 November 1917 to Gopabandhu Chaudhury and Ramadevi Chaudhury in Cuttack. Though she belonged to a Zemindar family of Kheras village in Jagatsinghpur district, her entire family members were freedom fighters who sacrificed everything for the cause of the nation. Though she did not have any formal education in her childhood, she learned Sanskrit, Bengali, and Gujarati from her father Gopabandhu Chaudhury, and poet Birakishore Das.

Through her own efforts, she also gained proficiency in Hindi and Urdu. From her childhood, she was trained and brought up in the Gandhian way of life and was taught extracurricular activities which helped her to sail on the journey of freedom struggle. When she was only five she hoisted a tricolor flag on the roof of her house which drew considerable attention. Her anti-British sentiment took a definite shape after knowing about the Jalliwanwallabagh massacre in the Town Hall, Cuttack where its commemorative day was observed on 13 April 1924. She was determined to join the freedom struggle along with her parents, uncle, and aunt. She was sent to ‘Alaska Ashram’, a school for grooming freedom fighters where she was taught spinning, assisting the volunteers in social work, and the art of non-cooperation and passive resistance. She actively participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1930 by joining the Salt Satyagraha, picketing in front of shops selling foreign goods and liquor as a member of ‘Banar Sena’. Though in those days collection of donations for Congress was declared unlawful, Annapurna dared to ask for donations openly in the street of Cuttack for which she was arrested. But as she was a minor, she was released after being imposed a fine of two hundred rupees. In 1934, she participated in the ‘ Harijan Pada Yatra’ led by Gandhi from Puri to Bhadrak spreading the messages of removal of untouchability, entering into Harijan’s house to teach them about cleanliness and the importance of joining the freedom struggle. She along with other freedom fighters contributed to establishing the ‘Seva Ghar Ashram’ at Bairi where she worked for the uplift of the Harijans, by educating them and also worked extensively for the education of the women. She was also sent to Wardha by Gandhi Seva Sangha where she was taught about basic education. On 25 March 1942, she married Sarat Maharana who was also an epitome of self-sacrifice and simplicity with whom she vigorously campaigned for the social uplift of Harijan. In 1942, inspired by Gandhi’s call for ‘Do or Die Annapurna organized ‘Shanti Sena’ and ‘Maran Sena’ at Ramchandrapur in Bairi. These two groups started seizing post offices, burning official papers, hoisting tricolor flags at various places, and declaring independence. Though the police tried to stand in their way she showed exemplary courage, and boldness and stood firm against the British forces. She was arrested and sentenced to two years of imprisonment. Though after her release, she was forbidden to visit Bairi, the Ashram founded by her family, she defied the order for which she was again arrested and sentenced to five months imprisonment. In 1946, she was trained by the ‘Kasturba Gandhi Smaraknidhi’ camp in Ramchandrapur in Bairi where she pledged to accept ‘Seva’ or service to people as the goal of her life. In 1947 after India’s independence, she instead of remaining in active politics chose to dedicate her life to the constructive program of Gandhi. She set out her campaign for women’s education, empowerment, communal harmony, participation in the Sarvoday program, providing relief to drought and flood victims, etc. She passed away on 31 December 2012 at the age of 95.
