STORY TELLING

THE OBSTACLE IN OUR PATH

In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it.

Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been.

The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never understand.

Moral : Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve one's condition.

SPECIAL INTRODUCTION

SARLA THAKRAL

The first lady pilot of India

[8 August 1914 - 15 March 2008]

Sarla Thakral... The first woman to get an aviation pilot licence and fly an aircraft. The first lady pilot who soared into the blue skies in India’s very own traditional attire, Saree. Yes, she was only 21 when she achieved that sky.

In the year 1936, when flying was like a miracle, Thakral created history. Born in Delhi, in 1921 this brave lady got her license when she was just 21. Modestly dressed in a Saree, Thakral’s flight enthralled an air of courage and dedication towards dreams and determination to accomplish them.

Her first step in the flying world was in the cockpit of GYPSY moth in a saree. That was the time when they saw only male faces in a cockpit, Thakral was the new face of aviation in India and a fresh breeze of courage and determination.

She was married at the age of 16 to P D Sharma and flew her first aircraft at 21. She was then not only married but also had a four year old daughter. Her husband too was the first Indian pilot to get an airmail pilot’s licence to fly between Karachi and Lahore, he encouraged her further to pursue her dreams. PD Sharma had 9 pilots in the family which gave Thakral the much needed support and push in fulfilling her dreams.

But as its said life always has something tumultuous in store for you. Thakral’s life took a dreadful turn, she lost her husband in a plane crash in 1939. She got licence A after successful 1,000 hours of flying and was all set to obtain the ‘B’ license which would have given the opportunity to fly a commercial plane. But this couldn’t be fulfilled because World War 2 broke out and the civil training was suspended.

She returned to Lahore to join the Mayo School of Arts and got a diploma in fine arts. After partition she shifted to Delhi with her 2 daughters and a dedicated follower of the Arya Samaj sect, she was re-married to PP Thakral. There was no looking back at the past. Thakral succeeded in establishing herself as a renowned painter and supplied her jewelry designs to several cottage industries for over 20 years. She also had started textile printing and sari prints that did amazingly well in the fashionable crowd.

Regardless of the twists and turns in Thakral’s life, she lived every phase just perfectly. She was a true gem and an inspiration to all the women till she took her last breath in March, 2009.

A remarkable emblem and true supporter of life in life itself, “Every morning I wake up and chart out my plans. If there is plenty of work I feel very happy otherwise I feel a precious day has been wasted,” she said.
