1968 : Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay - Philosopher, Economist, Sociologist, Historian, Journalist, Political Leader and Founder of Jana Sangh was assassinated by an unknown assailant. (Born : 25 September 1916)

1977 : Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed - 5th President of India. He was elected by Congress under the leadership of Indira Gandhi in the 1974 presidential election. On 25 June 1975 Emergency was declared during his reign. (Born : 13 May 1905)

1986 : Philosopher, Economist, Sociologist, Historian, Journalist, Political Leader Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay was assassinated by an unknown assailant. (Born : 25 September 1916)

1989 : Famous writer Pandit Narendra Sharma passed away.

STORY TELLING

THE WOLF AND THE LAMB

A lamb was grazing with a flock of sheep one day. She soon found some sweet grass at the edge of the field. Farther and farther she went, away from the others.

She was enjoying herself so much that she did not notice a wolf coming nearer to her. However, when it pounced on her, she was quick to start pleading, "Please, please don't eat me yet. My stomach is full of grass. If you wait a while, I will taste much better."

The wolf thought that was a good idea, so he sat down and waited. After a while, the lamb said, "If you allow me to dance, the grass in my stomach will be digested faster." Again the wolf agreed.

While the lamb was dancing, she had a new idea. She said, "Please take the bell from around my neck. If you ring it as hard as you can, I will be able to dance even faster."

The wolf took the bell and rang it as hard as he could. The shepherd heard the bell ringing and quickly sent his dogs to find the missing lamb. The barking dogs frightened the wolf away and saved the lamb's life.

Moral : The gentle and weak can sometimes be cleverer than fierce and strong.

SPECIAL INTRODUCTION

FAKHRUDDIN ALI AHMED

[Former president of India]

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, born on May 13, 1905, Delhi, India & died on February 11, 1977, New Delhi), statesman who was president of India from 1974 to 1977.

The son of an army doctor from Assam, Ahmed was educated in India and studied history at the University of Cambridge, graduating in 1927. After returning to India, he was elected to the Assam legislature (1935). As Assam’s minister of finance and revenue in 1938, he was responsible for some radical taxation measures. On the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the Indian National Congress party had a confrontation with British power, and Ahmed was jailed for a year. Soon after release he was again imprisoned for another three and a half years, being released in April 1945. In 1946 he was appointed advocate general of Assam and held the post for six years.

After a term in the national Parliament, he returned to Assam politics until Prime Minister Indira Gandhi included him in her first cabinet in January 1966. He held a variety of portfolios—irrigation and power, education, industrial development, and agriculture. Ahmed became India’s fifth president in 1974. He died of a heart attack in February 1977.
